I used to have a standard Pelican case for my tools and instruments. It survived over a decades of daily abuses and regular rough treatment at the airports. At some points I was pushing its weight past 70 lbs. It wasn’t fun to keep explaining to the bean counters about extra airline expenses, nor it was kind to my back hauling it around. So I downgraded to a Husky Rolling Tool Bag ($79 from Home Depot). Immediately, my haulage went just below 50 lbs. Beautiful! But happiness didn’t last long. I went through 3 of them in 2 years. The soft-sided Husky wasn’t meant for such abuse. I went back to Pelican. I chose the Pelican Air 1607, a much spacious case, but still managed to keep my loaded weight under 50 lbs.
After 2 years of heavy usage, the case was all scratched up, with smudges and gouges everywhere, but it was still perfectly usable with its functionality intact. I lost a wheel (busted bearing) at one time. It was quickly replaced with a spare from my colleague, so I didn’t have a chance to test out their warranty service. From the grapevine, their customer service was exemplary and folks had nothing but good experience with them.

Pelican Products, Inc. was founded in 1976 in Torrance, CA to manufacture protective cases for delicate and valuable equipment. They are still located and manufacturing most their products in the same area. At the present, some productions have moved to their East Coast operation in South Deerfield, MA. They also have various small operations overseas which explains a number of imported accessories in their product line-up.
